This October, our team at C.A. Goldberg, PLLC, showed up in full force – attending and sponsoring conferences and events that reflect the core of what we do: fighting for and supporting survivors, driving change, and pushing the law forward. Our team members connected with others, shared knowledge, and met with event attendees to talk about our work, mission, and available resources. Check out below a summary of our whereabouts throughout the month of October!

Sexual Health Alliance’s (SHA) annual Sexological Conference

In early October, our Chief of Staff Norma Buster attended the Sexual Health Alliance’s (SHA) annual Sexological Conference, and CAG – the only law firm represented – served as a sponsor for the second year in a row. A celebration of SHA’s ten-year anniversary, hundreds of sexual health providers and experts – including sex therapists, educators and counselors from across six continents – were in attendance. This year, Norma was invited as a presenting speaker and gave a talk on “Deepfakes to Chatbots: The Intersection of Sex, Tech, AI, and Victims’ Rights,” illustrating the various ways technology can be used as a weapon to harm people.

During her presentation, Norma shared background on our firm, the types of cases we handle, and what we’re up against when it comes to current (archaic) laws that protect Big Tech, like Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. She also talked about the impacts of tech-facilitated violence on victims and survivors.

National Sexual Violence Law Conference & Shining Star Celebration

Later in October, Norma and Law Graduate Roshelle Firdman headed to Chicago for the National Sexual Violence Law Conference, hosted by Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC). Once again, CAG proudly sponsored this conference, and Norma and Roshelle networked with lawyers, advocates, and other professionals from across the country dedicated to using the civil legal justice systems to better respond to the needs of survivors of sexual violence.

Also, a big shoutout to our incredible client Matthew Herrick, who gave a talk with the Stalking, Prevention, Awareness, and Resource Center (SPARC) titled “Solving the Puzzle: Understanding What it Takes to Successfully Respond to Tech-Facilitated Stalking and Sexual Violence.” Matthew shared his experience as a survivor of tech-facilitated stalking and sexual violence that happened through the app Grindr, highlighting the techniques his stalker used to negatively impact his professional, personal, and emotional health and to solicit sexual violence against Matthew from strangers. We’ve had the privilege of knowing Matthew for years, and his strength and power in sharing his story always serves as a reminder of why our work matters.

On October 9th, Senior Partner Roxanne Rimonte and Associate Zaynah Chaudhury attended VRLC’s Shining Star Celebration. The celebration honored attorneys Stéphane Babonneau and Antoine Camus for their groundbreaking work representing client Gisèle Pelicot. VRLC also recognized attorneys Kristen Gibbons Feden and Anthony Mirenda who shared their experiences advocating and representing survivors in high profile and complex civil litigation cases.

Speaking Opportunity at Cottey College

In late October, Roxanne spoke on a panel at Cottey College that brought together changemakers who are taking action against the dark side of AI. Roxanne was joined by panelists Larry J. Cohen, writer, producer and council member for the Writers Guild of America, East, where he serves as the co-chair of the A.I. Task Force, and Melissa Hutchins, Founder & CEO of Certifi AI, a technology company developing AI-powered deepfake detection and digital identity protection solutions. The three panelists discussed AI’s negative impact on creative and technical fields, as well as how this technology has put people in danger.

Society of Family Planning Conference

Lastly, CAG finished the fall conference tour with Partner Laura Hecht-Felella and Zaynah attending the Society of Family Planning Conference in Pittsburgh at the end of October, where our firm was also a sponsor. This annual meeting brings together those committed to sharing information, learning from one another, and receiving support from peers, mentors, and allies, all with a focus on evidence-informed and person-centered abortion and contraception care. Since 2017, our firm has provided free legal representation to abortion providers, clinics, researchers, and advocates experiencing online and offline attacks, harassment, and privacy violations. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to network with those committed to advancing just and equitable abortion and contraception informed by science while feeling safe and supported.
